Relating distinctive orthographic and phonological processes to episodic memory performance.

Three experiments examined the role of three distinctive perceptual factors in recognition and recall memory. Using a subject-paced presentation rate, the first two experiments (recognition and recall) examined (1) the number of phonological-to-orthographic neighbors, (2) phonological-to-orthographic consistency, and (3) orthographic-to-phonological consistency. The third experiment (recall) re...

Relating semantic and episodic memory systems.

Episodic and semantic memory are two forms of declarative memory which appear to function in distinct yet interdependent ways. Here we provide direct evidence for a functional relationship between these two memory systems by showing that left lateral temporal lobe regions involved in semantic memory play an important role in accurate episodic memory retrieval.

Updating Processes in Episodic Memory

The efficient use of episodic memory does not only require to remember new information, it also requires to forget old information. That such memory updating is part of our memory system is suggested by behavioral studies examining both contextual and intentional memory updating. The electrophysiological correlates of episodic memory updating, however, still remain elusive. To investigate episo...

Motivation and Episodic Memory Performance

In everyday life, motivation and learning are connected like music and dancing. Many educators realize this and work hard to improve their students' motivation. A motivated student may repeat and self-rehearse the content of a chapter more often, which leads to better learning. However, from a cognitive psychology point of view, it is still uncertain if motivation without differences in repetit...

The Neural Processes Underpinning Episodic Memory

Episodic memory is the memory for our personal past experiences. Although numerous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies investigating its neural basis have revealed a consistent and distributed network of associated brain regions, surprisingly little is known about the contributions individual brain areas make to the recollective experience. In this thesis I address this fundame...
